Why I Cook Low-Salt Food For My Clients

Safeguard the heart: Your Life Force

Heart disease remains the leading cause of death globally, with cardiovascular diseases rising year after year. There's a well-established link between high blood pressure and heart disease, and excessive intake of salt (sodium) is the leading contributor to high blood pressure (hypertension). And given the high-pressure careers many of my clients have, which can also lead to hypertension, protecting the heart through food is a no-brainer. The good news is that it's not difficult to do; it just requires awareness and self-care.

Why Does Excessive Salt Contribute to Heart Disease?

Excessive salt causes high fluid retention in the body, adding pressure to the arteries and resulting in hypertension and high blood pressure. The British Heart Foundation and NHS recommend a daily salt intake of no more than 6 grams, which is about one level teaspoon. Unfortunately, the average adult’s daily intake exceeds this recommendation, and restaurant and processed foods are often high in salt. While modern society's convenience is appealing - sometimes needed - it can also harm our health if we don’t discern what we invite into our lives.

However, my approach to health is not fear-centered. Instead, I focus on nurturing the heart with love and care, keeping our life force strong. Why wouldn’t we? There are so many life adventures to embark on that require our strong, healthy hearts.

The Reality of Hypertension for People Over 40

Hypertension ( high blood pressure ) become more common for individuals over 40, especially those with demanding careers and lifestyles. Since this process is usually gradual, many people don’t realise they're putting their heart health at risk until it's too late. But the good news is you can make lifestyle changes now.

Low-Salt Food Can Be Incredibly Tasty

Salt is just one flavour among many. There are countless other flavours to explore. By letting ingredients' natural flavours shine and experimenting with interesting pairings, we can create delicious dishes. Too much salt can mask the beautiful flavours of ingredients, spices, and herbs. Texture also plays a crucial role in a pleasant eating experience.

Example of a Delicious Low-Salt Dish

Consider my Italian Orzo with Chicken, Carrots, and Celery. This dish highlights the umami of chicken, the sweetness of carrots, the punch of onions, and the earthy flavour of celery. These simple, classic ingredients come together beautifully. A few bay leaves, with their subtle, floral taste, pair perfectly with the bold flavour of oregano, which doesn’t require much. None of the herbs require a large amount, and just a little salt is needed. The dish is incredibly fresh and tasty!

The Choice to Nurture Your Health

What we put into our bodies day in and day out shapes our health. We always have the choice to nurture it with love and a touch of low-salt deliciousness! By making mindful choices, we can support our hearts and live vibrant, healthy lives.
